CMS Releases Final ICD-10 Rules
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services has released a final rule for replacing the 30-year-old ICD-9-CM code set with ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS.  The final rule outlines the effective date as 60 days after publication in the Federal Register, and the compliance date for the two classification sets is established as October 1, 2013. A second rule related to the HIPAA transaction standards – X12 version 5010 and NCPDP version D.0  establish earlier effective dates, with the latest being January 1, 2013.  The HIPAA transactions software must be updated to accommodate the use of the ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS code sets.

For more information, please visit the Federal Register page.

Beginning the Transition to ICD-10 Webcast

In response to the proposed rule for the adoption of ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), AHIMA is offering members a free, informational Webcast, “Beginning the Transition to ICD-10,” hosted by AHIMA staff members Sue Bowman, RHIA, CCS, and Ann Zeisset, RHIT, CCS, CCS-P.

The Webcast, a recorded version of a live event originally broadcast on September 9, focuses on managing the transition to ICD-10—what HIM professionals should do now to plan for and begin the transition in their workplace and the scope of AHIMA’s plan to support HIM professionals and the industry during the next three years. It provides a high-level overview of the CMS notice of proposed rule making implementing ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS coding systems, including who and what is impacted by this proposed rule.

To access the Webcast, visit the AHIMA CoP; go to www.ahima.org, sign in using the myAHIMA box in the upper right-hand corner, type in your member ID number and password, and click “Login”. The links to the Webcast and resource book are under “Community Links”.

In addition, AHIMA has also developed a 15 page analysis of the proposed rule and can be accessed by visiting www.ahima.org or by clicking here.
